Little Miami academic team heads to state

Remember the Little Miami Academic team? You know, the one that won their fourth league title a couple of months ago? Well, this past weekend, they did it one better.

The Little Miami Academic Team won the 2017 OAC Regional Championship, the first regional win in school history. The victory qualifies Little Miami to move on to the state playoffs at St. Charles High School in Columbus on May 13.

The Panthers, led by seniors Lien Nguyen (captain) and Daniel Birdsall, had to defeat teams from Batavia, Mercy, CHCA, Ross and Wyoming – and in the finals had to beat Walnut Hills twice -- in order to bring home the championship.

Coach Ron Maupin said he was thrilled with the results.

“In my 17 years with the program, I've never seen a group of students work so hard to come together to reach their goals,” he said. “To say that I'm proud of them is beyond an understatement.”

Other members of the winning team are juniors Tejas Dinesh, Jacob Anderson and sophomore Thomas Sweeney.

The regional contest was held at Little Miami High School and Maupin said several individuals helped make the match run smoothly, including Chris Lynch, Jen Lyke, Kelly Blanchard and Jennifer Dafoe who served as match moderators.
