Harrison wrestling wins big at SWOC tourney


Harrison – the fourth-ranked team in The Enquirer Division I area coaches’ poll – had eight of its 14 wrestlers reach the finals (and four won) in Saturday’s Southwest Ohio Conference Championship at Wilmington.The Wildcats finished first with 208 team points. Wilmington finished second with 142, Edgewood was third with 138 and Ross was fourth with 136.

Harrison’s CJ Brown (106) started the scoring in the finals with an exciting pin of Wilmington’s Jordan Pierce in 0:19.

Edgewood had a pair first-place finishers win back-to-back matches with Jaren Rutherford at 113 (7-6 decision) and TJ Bean at 120 (6-1 decision). Bean was also voted Wrestler of the Year in the conference, and was the 113-pound champion in 2013. The Cougars also had DJ Campos win the 145 pound weight class with a major decision of Harrison’s Angelo Scarlato.

Wilmington had three wrestlers finish first. Zach Macella pinned Josh Huff (Harrison) at 126, Zach Johnson won a decision over Luke Bernhardt (Harrison) at 138, and Evan Hickey beat Mount Healthy’s Brian Pringle, 8-2 at 195.

Harrison’s other first-place finishers were Dominic Rivera (160), Bo McIntosh (132) and Mason Brunner (220).

Andrew Dunn (Ross) repeated as champion at 152 with an 8-2 decision over Ryan Sizemore (Harrison). The Rams also had Dalton Jones (170) and Chase Sayers (182) finish first. Gavin Peacock came in first place for Ross as well with a pin of Mount Healthy's Ke'Eryon Deal in the final match of the day. 

Ross won big last season, while Harrison finished second. Edgewood and Wilmington both rounded out the top four a year ago as well. 

Dalton Jones (Ross), Andrew Dunn (Ross) and TJ Bean (Edgewood) were the only wrestlers to repeat as league champions.
